Bi Weekly Bulletin : June 8 to June 19, 2026

A Message from your Administrator

Dear Langstaff Families and Community Members:

We have made it to the last month of the school year. The month of June is always welcomed with open arms and excitement, as we look ahead to the end of the school year, a wonderful graduating class, the summer months, and moving on to whatever the next chapter is. This month is certainly a time to reflect on how far we have come as a school community and what we have learned about ourselves.

June is marked by many celebrations, including the achievements and heritage of our diverse populations. Pride Week, National Indigenous History Month, Italian Heritage Month, and Portuguese Heritage Month are acknowledged in schools across York Region and beyond.

June has just begun, and so much is already happening. Last week, four of our Grade 11 and Grade 12 classes participated in a guided Challah Bake to acknowledge and celebrate Jewish Heritage Month at LSS. In addition, in our Learning Commons, we have hosted a panel display on Jewish customs and a history of the Jewish community in York Region. Our students have enjoyed reading this interesting information.

Our Grade 9 students will be writing their Math EQAO assessments on June 9th and 10th; we wish them good luck! Next week, our Grade 12 students are looking forward to dancing the night away at Prom. The theme is "Diamonds After Dark" and we know this is perfect as the students will be sparkling this evening.

We also recently ran our Student Council elections for the 2026-2027 school year. We had 35 students put their names forward for a possible 11 positions. It was so nice to see so many brave "Bears" take the leap into school politics. We congratulate all those who were successful in being elected for next year's council.

While June is well underway, we are gearing up for two major events that take place in every High School at this time: final exams and Graduation. While students are taking part in the final lessons of the 2025-2026 school year, our Graduation committee is putting the finishing touches on the milestone event. We know that both exams and Graduation are highly anticipated as they both mark the end of an era. June exams mark the end of a school year, and Graduation marks the end of High School.

And while the school is gearing up for these final events, I am personally gearing up to say goodbye to a community that I love and cherish very much. This year will not only be my last year at Langstaff Secondary School, but it will also be my last year as a High School Principal. This year marks my graduation, or retirement as I am told I have to call it, from education. After 35 years with the YRDSB, which includes 14 years in the classroom and 21 years in administration, I have decided it is time for me to move on to different adventures. I will say more in the final e-bulletin in a couple of weeks, but just know that I have truly loved being a part of the LSS community (for the second time!) and will miss this place and the people very much.

Wishing you all the best for the remainder of the school year.

Sincerely,

Ms. S. Epstein

Principal

Co-op Student Spotlight: Exceptional Leadership at Suretrack Group

We love celebrating our students' real-world achievements! Recently, one of our high school co-op students had an incredibly exciting and fast-paced day at their placement with Suretrack Group. The company hosted a high-profile visit from federal political leader Pierre Poilievre, and our student was right in the center of the action, gaining hands-on experience in event logistics and operational management.

Behind-the-Scenes Responsibilities

Hosting a high-ranking public figure requires immense coordination. Our co-op student stepped up to the challenge by handling:

  • Logistics & Setup: Transforming a working warehouse space into a professional event venue.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensuring strict safety protocols were meticulously followed for the safety of the guests and staff.
  • Event Operations: Managing the final post-event cleanup and restoring the space to standard operations.

During the visit, Mr. Poilievre spoke about current Canadian issues and highly praised Suretrack Group's economic success.

"It was a great experience to help prepare for a high-profile event," our student shared, noting how rewarding it was to see the hard work pay off.

Congratulations to our student for representing our school with such professionalism and dedication!
