Bi Weekly Bulletin : November 3 to November 14, 2025

A Message from your Administrators

Dear Langstaff Families and Community Partners:

Hope your Halloween was spooktacular!!

Last week, we had an amazing Parent/Guardian-Teacher Interview Night. We loved seeing so many parents in the building. It was so nice to see many Parent/Guardian-Teacher conversations taking place. We really like our "Meet & Greet" format and we were so glad that you do as well.

Today, we celebrated Halloween at school. We loved seeing so many great costumes, and we know the students really enjoyed the Halloween Fashion Show that took place during the lunch hour. As well, the students loved looking for the "Golden Tickets" and those who found the Golden Tickets were very happy to receive a Halloween treat.

On November 5th, we have a very exciting event taking place. Our grade 9 students will be taking part in the annual Take Your Kids to Work Day. All grade 9 students will be attending a workplace of interest to them of a parent or family member. This day at work can occur in person or virtually. Important forms have been sent home electronically to all grade 9 students and families. There will be no Grade 9 classes at LSS on this day. Parents/Guardians of Grade 9 students, please make sure that you have completed the permission form.

Also, on this day we are having future Langstaff Bears, the grade 8 students, who will be participating in a visit to Langstaff SS. All grade 8s will participate in visiting classes, meeting with Guidance, Admin, and Student Council, and each grade 8 student will receive a little LSS swag to help them feel more connected to their future high school. Then, on the evening of November 6th we will be hosting our Grade 8 Open House for all future Langstaff Bears. We are so excited to be able, once again, to have our future LSS families join us, to hear about High School, meet our wonderful staff, and check out our building and facilities.

We are in the long stretch until Winter Break, and we look forward to making it filled with good spirit and learning.

Ms. S. Epstein

Principal

Age of Majority Consent

Once a student turns 18, it becomes more complicated for the School/Teacher to reach out and connect with you, either with specific concerns or to share information in general. In order for the school to maintain contact, your adult child (i.e., after their 18th birthday) must sign and return the Age Majority Consent Form. This form can be obtained from the Main Office.

For any student who has not submitted the form after their 18th birthday, contact between school and home ceases. If your child is turning 18 this school year, please discuss with them what will happen when they turn 18.

If you have any questions, please connect with the Main Office.

Communication with Home

At LSS we offer several methods of communication to share information on a regular basis with our parents’ and guardians’ homes.  A calendar of school events and our bi-weekly news bulletins are posted on our school website.

We also provide daily attendance reports to parents and guardians every day.  In order to provide you with up-to-date attendance reports and other information, we request that all parents and guardians submit current email addresses; these can be updated by sending your email address to: langstaff.ss@yrdsb.ca

Student Parking

Langstaff SS has a student-designated parking lot, which is on the west side of the school.  To park there, students must come to the main office and pick up a student parking form and have it filled out and signed by their parent/guardian.

The Because YOUth Matter workshop will support parents in recognizing early warning signs and understanding how to respond to their children's mental needs.

With mental health concerns on the rise among youth, being informed about mental health empowers parents to foster open conversations, reduce stigma, and create a supportive environment where their child feels safe seeking help.

Goals:

  • Parents will engage in conversations about why mental well-being is important.
  • Parents will define and discuss mental health.
  • The group will work towards destigmatizing the conversation around mental health and wellness.
  • Parents will have increased knowledge of the skills and resources needed to support and communicate with young people about their mental well-being.
  • Parents will feel more confident in recognizing signs and symptoms (red flags) in young people, and how to open up compassionate and empathetic conversations as well as being able to provide supportive resources for next steps.

This workshop is free of charge!

                                                                                                   EMPOWERING INDEPENDENCE, BUILDING CONFIDENCE

At Café EXTRA Ordinaire, we are scheduled to open our Life Skills Centre on November 15th, 2025. We aim to empower individuals that are neurodiverse (18+) by equipping them with essential life skills. Through personalized coaching, hands-on experiences, and a supportive environment, we help individuals that are neurodiverse build the confidence and abilities to navigate the world on their own terms.

Life skills encompass a wide range of abilities that help individuals function independently in their day-to- day lives. For individuals that are neurodiverse, these skills can open doors to greater independence, self- sufficiency, and overall well-being. Our programs focus on: Communication Skills, Household Management, Independent Living Skills, Social Skills, Time Management, Personal Care, Financial Literacy, Employment and Career Skills, and Physical Fitness Skills.

At Café EXTRA Ordinaire, our staff have had a criminal and reference check completed and our ratio is 5:1, and have other programs available. We believe that diversity is our strength, and we celebrate the unique talents and perspectives everyone brings to our team. Our commitment to inclusion extends to every aspect of our cafe, from our hiring practices to our customer service. We strive to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that encourages personal and professional growth for all members of our community with a focus on: Customized Learning Plans, Supportive Environment, and Real-World Applications.
